The Xbox Marketplace in China is currently holding a promotion where they are giving out Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed 3 for free. Thanks to the resourceful citizens of the internet, the offer works for Xbox players around the globe (since the game is obtained as a download from Xbox Live), not just people living in China.
As Reddit user arborday explains, the offer can be redeemed with the just 3 simple steps:
- Sign up for a new account on xbox.com with a previously unused email address
- While signing up, select China as the country while entering a Shanghai address (the discussion suggests using an address of any hotel in Shanghai, which can be easily found with a quick internet search)
- Sign in on the Xbox using this new account, redeem Assassin’s Creed 3 and start downloading the game
The steps require no changes to your existing ‘main’ Xbox Live account (in fact, a region change to China for existing accounts has been discouraged since it doesn’t work that way). Other gamers in the Reddit discussion topic have confirmed that the steps above work and that once downloaded using the alternative account, other profiles on the Xbox can access and play it.
Update: As of 10pm GMT, the offer no longer works for gamers as trying to go through with the game redemption gives an error message that the game is currently unavailable for purchase or for the region. Missed the offer? Assassin’s Creed 3 is available for half price at $29.99 on Amazon for both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
