Update: Naughty Dog has confirmed that the upcoming PS3 game will be delayed to June 14 to “ensure every detail of The Last of Us is up to Naughty Dog’s internal high standards”.
Polishing and bug fixing in the video game industry has seen a spike in rates as of 2013, and it definitely means that the match is on for the biggest blockbuster titles due this year to compete for the most number of video game awards. First there was a double delay for Bioshock Infinite, from October 2012 to February 2013 and then next March. Then, originally slated for a March/April 2013 release, Grand Theft Auto V was delayed to September.
Now, Walmart and BestBuy retail listings suggest that The Last of Us release date has been pushed back to June 18. A BestBuy customer tweeted that he has been notified about the delay of his pre-order. The survival-horror game was originally due on May 7, but it looks like more polishing time is needed.
Delayed release dates are a good sign of avoiding day-one patches and less glitchy gameplay, so I say: take all the time and make the best out of it, Naughty Dog.
