This first episode introduces the Basecamp System as well as Lara Croft’s survival instincts for the upcoming Tomb Raider reboot and the approach looks similar to Batman: Arkham City. Just like Batman, players can upgrade Lara’s skills when she gains points from doing various actions such as exploring. Lara’s ‘survival instinct’ works like Batman’s ‘detective mode’ where objects that are useful in puzzle solving are highlighted. The video also shows off the importance of three elements (fire, water and wind) when it comes down to deciphering more puzzles.
What I find particularly brilliant in this video (and future gameplay) is the versatility. If Lara isn’t balancing on fallen trees, she’s climbing rocks or trees. If she isn’t doing that, she’s zip-lining across the skies. This shows that the concept of the game isn’t simply about running, jumping and attacking, which can get rather tedious if you ask me. Then there’s also the wide range of weapons. Lara’s main weapon will be a bow and arrow (used for both stealth and open attacks), but eventually she will master old skills and acquire new gear such as firearms.
Excited? Tomb Raider will be released on March 5, 2013 for PS3, Xbox 360 and PC.
